Made another visit to the library yesterday and borrowed the same book talked about in the last post. I continued reading at the beginning of Unit II: Communication. As usual, the first chapter dealt about the definition of communication.
Back in college, communication was defined as the transmission of information by a sender to a receiver through various channels after which, the receiver would respond by transmitting due feedback.
Now however, communication is defined as “the process of sharing and the relationship of the participants in this process” (Kincaid and Schramm). Much emphasis is put on the word “sharing” or simply “share”. Accordingly, the word “share” connotes something that two or more people do together, in contrast to an individual who sends or receives.
This new definition got me to think of how new media has reinvented modern communication. When Google+ went public, a presentation was released that said that nowadays, because of the Internet, people engage in “a shared experience”. Such is the case with the existence of social networks, blogs, video logs, phlogs (photo blogs), microblogs, and other social networking services.
Communication definitely has come a long way from simple conversation, either face-to-face, through the phone, or through carrier mail. Because of the convenience provided by the web, immediate and easy interaction is present. Sharing thoughts and reactions about ideas can easily be rendered.
Now that I think about it, there arises the question of “due feedback”. Are the thoughts and reactions shared pertaining to a specific idea posted online appropriate? Are these shared ideas suitable? And is the case of such ideal communication or “sharing process” always carried out?
